Making repairs to an asphalt driveway can sometimes be tricky. It is very important to make the repairs correct the first time, thus eliminating the need to make the same repairs over and over. By fixing the job right the first time, you will save yourself time and money in the long run.
There are two major factors that lead to asphalt failure, ultraviolet rays and storm water. First, the sun's ultraviolet rays can breakdown the asphalt binding material. This allows the water to penetrate down to the base material that lies underneath the asphalt paving. You will want to remove the asphalt and check the condition of the subgrade. If the subgrade material is not suitable, it will need to be removed. Sometimes the subgrade material can become saturated and turn into mud or a material that will no longer compact. This material is not a suitable base material. You will need your new pavement to be on a good compacted ground.
The next step before paving or patching is to apply a tach coat. The tach coat will assure the paving material will stick or adhere to the material you are paving. It is also best to saw cut all around the problem area, to ensure the area matches the elevation of the existing asphalt. This will give you the full depth of the new asphalt surrounding the entire perimeter of the repair.
Finally, apply the new asphalt material up to the existing grade. The new asphalt paving material should be applied at the same depth as the existing asphalt. To ensure the area matches the elevation of the existing asphalt. Depending on the size and depth of the excavation, it may be necessary to compact the new material in lifts as it is put into place. The asphalt material should be compacted with a roller, or a walk behind vibratory compactor. Following these steps will help to insure a proper repair at your residence or business.
