The Great Benefits of Grapes

If you choose to eat grapes, don't reverse your decision! Grapes contain significant amounts of resveratrol – a potent antioxidant. Resveratrol is a phytonutrient (phyto - plant). Resveratrol is the subject of considerable research due to its antioxidants, as well as its anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, and immune system boosting properties.

In recent European research with mice, resveratrol was shown to improve symptoms (diarrhea, intestinal inflammation, rectal bleeding) of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Previous studies have shown that resveratrol builds resistance to stroke, improves brain function, protects against diabetes, and inhibits prostate cancer cell growth. The latest research suggests that resveratrol may be effective in the prevention and treatment of Crohn's Disease and Colitis. These conditions affect almost 1,000,000 Americans. Grapes are the main source of resveratrol.

Bioflavanols or OPC are also believed to counteract the effects of autoimmune diseases like Crohn's Disease and Colitis. Bioflavanols occur naturally in plant compounds. They are powerful antioxidants which fight inflammation and the production of histamines in our body. Inflammation is the main culprit in causing the painful symptoms (gas, cramps, bloating) in Crohn's/Colitis.

Bioflavanols are found in broccoli and black or green tea as well as numerous fruits such as blackberries, apricots, and grapes. The OPC found in most foods, however, is present in limited quantities. The highest levels of bioflavanols are in pine bark, grape skin, and grape seed. Pine bark and grape seed are the two leading sources of bioflavanols.

The potency of OPC is lost in cooking. Of course, bioflavanols are at hand at any time with a handful of grapes. A fast-absorbing powder form of OPC (extracted from pine bark and grape seeds) can be used as a diet supplement. (Remember that people should not take herbs, powders, or potions without checking with their doctor.)

Besides controlling the inflammation of Crohn's Disease and Colitis, OPC is believed to help with other inflammation-related diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, hay fever, allergies or hepatitis, and lupus. The OPC in grape skin and grape seed neutralizes free radical activity and inhibits the harmful effects of inflammatory enzymes. A good reason for people with Crohn's Disease and Colitis to choose a handful of grapes!
