Visual Illusions are one class of magic that seldom require sleight of hand.
Much of what the Mentalist does in his act can be traced back directly to tests of the supernatural by mediums, spiritualists and psychics in the 19th Century. But Mentalism started long before that.
Most people think that sleight of hand works because the hand is quicker than the eye. But most of the time this isn't true. Also sleight of hand makes use of psychology, mis-direction, and choreography to make Visual Illusions.
When performing any type of Magic the audience has to be left thinking, "was that real". If that happens, then you know you did a great job.
Card Magic, most likely dates from the time playing cards became known, towards the second half of the fourteenth century, but its history in this period is not known. As in card magic, coin magic can be performed on the spur of the moment and without using any special props. With only a normal deck of playing cards, some Visual Illusions can be performed. After a lot of practice, you can amaze all those you perform for.
This is one of the building blocks in becoming a performer that will, in time, make you part of an amazing art. As everything else you learn in life, the better you become, the more you will be respected in the wonderful world of magic.
We all know how much kids love to show off. For every parent, seeing the glow on their face when they tell you a joke and make you laugh. That glow gets brighter when they perform Visual Illusions. Sometimes I think kids learn faster than adults, when it comes to some simple forms of Magic. To have any child do a Card Trick, or make a Coin suddenly disappear, can make your day.
When my grandson began learning to perform some simple tricks, he would light up when he showed me his latest trick. I could see how much he enjoyed it. Almost as much as me.
Coin magic does well in front of audiences of all ages. Illusions with coins are very popular objects. People love to see a performer use coins to entertain them. A performer can use regular coins they get from anyone they perform in front of, or can substitute a special coin using sleight of hand. Coin magic is popular because it often involves getting a coin from someone in the audience, and perform close up Illusions. The performer inserts his personality into the Trick to make the illusion more powerful.
When the performer uses a borrowed coin, the power of the Visual Illusion increases the effect, and brings more credibility to the performer. Some Tricks can be performed with any common coin, in a bar, or at a social event, or in the spur of the moment. You don't need to carry any special magic coins.
Many of these performances when done correctly give the performer a feeling of accomplishment, and leaves the people performed in front of wanting more. Most performers prefer to do Magic Tricks with Coins in their hands.
