Military technology has always been one of the driving forces for civilian progress. Since ancient times, people have taken concepts and innovations developed for war and adapted them for use during peace times. Weve applied them for purposes they were never meant for and have discovered applications that go way beyond the scope of their original design.
A classic example is the extensive network of roads that crisscross the entire globe today. Paved paths between distant locations were typically constructed by ancient monarchs to allow their armies to travel swiftly and easily. Transit times were significantly reduced if thousands of soldiers didnt have to slog through swamps and forests in order to reach their destination. The troops also had another role in the development of roads since they were often also the people who constructed them. During peace time, rulers would put idle men to work building roads all over the kingdom. This tradition is echoed in the superb engineering corps any modern competent military employs.
These roads had the unintended result of igniting civilian economy. Merchants found it much easier to get their goods to reach farther and farther away. International relations blossomed as travel became a less daunting prospect. Cities became cultural melting pots and the world seemed to be a much smaller place all of a sudden.
Today, military weapon technology has contributed just as much for civilian life. Some things are so subtle, like protective firearm coatings, that we dont even realize when were using their fruits.
The US Navy SEALs routinely put their weapons through extreme situations. They get exposed to water, mud and salt for extended periods of time. It became necessary to develop a way to protect the guns from the elements and make them last longer. The solution they came up with was an anti-corrosion shield that took the form of chemical firearms coatings.
The firearm coatings they had made have trickled down to us and the same technology is available for civilian use. The use of these metal protective treatments isnt limited to weapons. They are also used for vehicle and heavy equipment maintenance.
