I have heard many people ask about the difference between being religious and being spiritual. Those who are religious have chosen an organized religion and follow their doctrine and dogma. Most of the questions regarding their relationship with God are answered by those in positions of authority in their chosen religion.

They may live according to the Bible, the Torah, the Quran, the Holy Gita or other such texts. Religions tend to discourage any deviance from the teachings of their holy texts and therefore do not encourage much independent thought about God. Those who follow this path seem to feel very secure in the belief that their leaders know the way to God and will will lead them to him. I do not say this in criticism of this, but only as an observation. I have personally been a member of organized religion and have experienced what I am speaking about.

The spiritual person on the other hand is often not involved in organized religion and has much more independent thought about his/her personal relationship with God and where it can lead. The spiritual person tends to be much more free in how they feel about God and what is required of them. They may or may not believe in Heaven and Hell and they often have ideas and beliefs that are quite contrary to that of mainstream religion. They are usually less fearful about a wrathful God and what will happen to them when they leave this earth. Many spiritual people like myself are what is considered "New Age." This is a very broad term and includes many different beliefs. It does however signify that those involved in it are out of the main stream of American religion.

I make no judgment on this subject because it it my belief that each of us seeks the Creator in his/her own way and we must honor and respect one another and our differences. Surely our Divine Source is able to accept all of the diverse ways that we come to him.
