Standing Together
Americans have historically been a people who stand together during troubled times. What happened to us? Have we been too comfortable for too long and has this led to complacency and indifference to our responsibilities as citizens?
Have we become so lazy that we actually expect our leaders to somehow be more responsible than we are willing to be? Those same leaders who have been in bed with the business community for so long that they have long forgotten who they were elected to serve, and who continue to be obsessed with the concept of politics even beyond the point that it has paralyzed their ability to perform?
In The Early Days
When we were a young nation and our population was small and scattered, we still had a feeling of community and the right leader could bring us together under one purpose and one goal. But as time past and our footprint grew larger and larger and we spread further and further out across the continent we began to lose that feeling of community, things were more complicated and difficult and we began to feel more and more helpless and powerless. Since the general population was never exposed to any real education, ignorance became wide spread, and with it came fear.
Humans in a group tend to huddle together in secular sub groups of mutual identity in response to fear. At this point, even if we ask 'who are my brothers and sisters', we never look beyond our own little group. It is just too overwhelming to think of our nation, much less our species, as our family. We then become divided and this creates opposition and conflict with other groups. The surrender to fear makes us vulnerable to control and manipulation.
Comfort And Security
The only thing wrong with comfort and security is how we perceive it. Comfort and security are a desirable condition, not a life goal. People who are obsessed with comfort and security can be sure they have surrendered to fear and self imposed ignorance. If they do not break free, it will rule them throughout their lives. There is only one true security, our ability to think clearly and deal with life on the fly. This replaces fear with confidence and ignorance with understanding.
Too much comfort and security for too long can be a trap for the unaware. We tend to drift into a kind of cultural trance in which we somehow forget the importance of learning and growing and improving ourselves which should be a lifelong effort to overcome our natural ignorance. Instead, we become obsessed with the instant gratification of our pleasure centers which leads to a life of shallow superficiality and the complete abandonment of any authentic values, assuming they ever existed in the first place.
Divided We Fail
So now all the politicians are using the buzz words of change because they perceive that we all intuitively realize that the old ways are no longer appropriate to the many changes that have taken place in the last hundred years or so. Banks are advertising using the buzz words of strength and security trying to get us to once again trust in their incompetence and lack of integrity and values.
There are some groups who do not feel the tough times we're experiencing and want things to go on as usual. Its going to be up to the general population to let our leaders know that business as usual is no longer an option. Real change is almost always going to be fundamental change, that is, re-evaluation of our economic system, government system, infrastructure management systems and above all, our so called education system. Also a fundamental change in our mindset as a people, as a life form, is going to be necessary.
Divide and control is a traditional population management technique used by governing bodies for ages. We need to step up and realize that we the people are the true power but like our leaders, we the people are not yet qualified to intelligently use that power. Our current situation is the result of long term past bad thinking and the decisions and actions based on that bad thinking. Problems that have evolved over time will need to be corrected over time and the first long term solution must be our education system. It must be changed from an economic and social indoctrination system to a system based on authentic values and Human quality of life.
Above all, we need to change our secular mindset and come together and show each other understanding and compassion.
