The world has gotten much smaller over the past decades, however with wireless technology it has shrunk even more. The internet is great and being able to go on the internet to find virtually anything that you are interested in is also great. But it has almost always meant that you were tied to a wire, stuck inside where the plugs were. Wireless technology made it much easier to move around your home and to have multiple devices plugged into the same modem. But you were still limited as far as where you could roam.
Wireless technology, through the utilize of 3G and now 4G systems has allowed the wires to be thoroughly cut and nearly anywhere in the world can be an internet hotspot. Additionally, as the technology has gotten better, smaller and faster, it really has become more accessible as the costs have become more reasonable. It means more people are able to take advantage of the technology and use it in productive ways. It also means that there are a lot more ways to be distracted.
Many people have abandoned the wired experience altogether and have cut the cord going with a strictly wireless communication set-up. It's especially true with younger people that have not grown up with the traditional land line phones and they have never been in a world without computers in every home. So they are much more adaptable to new technology and it does not scare them off like it does to the old generations.
One advantage for truly wireless internet; be it on a phone or a netbook or notebook, is that you can do your work or research or anything that you would typically use the internet for anywhere you go. It gives you the freedom to go anywhere and not have to worry about finding a hot spot or a plug. One drawback to this freedom is that people are wrapped up in things that they would otherwise leave at home. People can work while they are at the beach or on a hike or somewhere that they should be enjoying rather than worry about work.
There are a lot of faces buried in laptops and staring at phones because the access is there and they are not paying attention to what is going on in front of them. That being said, if the user is responsible in the manner that they are using the technology, then there is nothing wrong with it.
