I see so many people living each day without purpose. Even the people I live with. They go through the motions of life, with little or no hope, not really planning their future. It's a tragedy, really.

I had once seen so much potential in these same people. They seem to have been beaten by life. Their motivation is gone, their light barely shining. I feel sorry for them.

For me, I refuse to surrender. I will not be mastered by fleeting pleasure or taking the easy way out of dealing with life. I can't imagine a life without challenge, a life without hope.

As for me, I want to choose my destiny, not be mastered by addiction. I want to be a person of value, not a dredge on another. I don't want to be part of the problem, but part of the solution.

What comes to mind if I said he or she is an addict?

I picture a person who is emotionally or physically dependent , unable or unwilling to meet life head on. The person is sloppily dressed, hygienically unkempt, and mentally distraught. You can tell with a glance that they have given up on life.

I don't want to address the obvious, but the less obvious, the addictions which involve technology. These people may be well dressed, professionals, and may be you or I.

There I said it, you may be an addict.

Yes, you may be an addict IF:

Your television "off button" quit working years ago,
Your internet "surfing" is covered by ESPN.
You pride yourself as "a power-text-message person"
Your cell phone conversations resemble a bad case of "chain smoking"
Your video gaming skills are rated as "expert level"

All these devices and activities have value, if combined with common sense. All these devices can be harmful, if combined with anything else.

It seems to me that some individuals lack the awareness or the willpower to know that enough is enough. Wasting our time at the expense of strengthening relationships, building our self worth, and sharing of ourselves with others is what you might call, addictive.

Yes, I see it everyday.

I challenge you to make a list of the "addictions" that you have in your life. Be honest with yourself, we all have them. Now, make a list of the more productive things that you could be doing with the time you are currently wasting.

You don't have to try to make an immediate change, but take a few items and choose to cut back on the amount of time you engage in them. Replace your old habits with new ones, and prepare to feel the power of accomplishment.

I did it.

You can do it!
