What is this new fad called Twitter, and why are so many people talking about it? Twitter is a type of social networking microblogging service in which a subscribed user has 140 characters to say what they have to to the rest of the world. Often referred to as a way of sending a "text message to the world," Twitter has grown in popularity over the past year to the point where even celebrities are using it. Additionally, news stations such as Fox and the Today Show regularly mention Twitter in their broadcasts.

The idea of twitter is to get as many "followers" as you can, the idea being that the more followers you have, the more traffic you can drive towards whatever your website may be. This isn't always the case, however. Some people use twitter to keep in touch with friends or to make new ones. The whole point of twitter, when you break it down, is to communicate with other people. Because you only have 140 characters in which to state your message, you have to make what you say relative to what you want people to hear. In other words, don't waste the space that you have in which to send a message.

From telling people that you are getting ready to take a shower to telling others how mad you are about something, Twitter provides a great avenue for sending messages. You can also upload your blog feed to Twitter so that Twitter automatically posts your new blogs online for others to see. Twitter is a great way to gain exposure for those who are otherwise unknown. From celebrities to your mom and dad, everyone seems to have a Twitter account. But the big question on many people's minds is whether or not Twitter will last. Is this Twitter revolution similar to Facebook and MySpace? Will it have any staying power, or will it fade away almost as abruptly as it came into the lives of so many? Only time will tell.

If you own a business, Twitter provides a great medium in which to 'create a buzz' about what you're doing. It shouldn't be used so much as a sales pitch type of thing though. There are ways in which you can get booted off of Twitter. For instance, if you are caught spamming people, that is a surefire way to get kicked out or have your account suspended pending review. There are tricks to it. For instance, if you're new to Twitter, try to follow people who have similar interests to you. Make sure your profile is filled out as fully as possible, letting people know who you are. Stay away from profile names that have a lot of numbers in it. Additionally, make sure you upload an actual picture of yourself because it helps people to know that you're not just spamming them. Respond to what other people post. Let them know you're alive and paying attention to what they have to say. Twitter can be extremely beneficial if you play your cards right and use it for the right reasons.
