Central Park is the popular park located in New York City. This park spreads over an area of 843 acres. It is one of the most visited parks in United States. It is calculated that about 25,000,000 people visit this park every year.
In 1850, The Evening Post editor and orator, William Cullen Bryant to build a Central Park as the New York City was losing the green space very quickly, forwarded the suggestion. As a result of this suggestion a swampland was purchased by the State of the New York City. Some part of immigrant housing was also purchased.
Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, the two American landscape architects, were chosen to oversee the Central Park project. It was not easy to build a park in that land as the place was used to be a junkyard. Over 10,000,000 junk materials were removed from the area. The State purchased about 5, 00,000 cubic feet of topsoil for construction.
The Central Park contains at least 4,000,000 plants, shrubs and trees with more than 1,500 species of plants. The park is managed by a nonprofit organization, which was established in1980.
Within the Park
You will find a great number of things in the park in your visit. It has over fifty two fountains. Many sculptures and monuments are placed in the park. The most sculpture in the park is that of Cleopatra's Needle, which is given by Egypt as a present. Other major and famous sculptures include Alice in Wonderland sculpture located at 75th Street north to Conservatory Water; Mother Geese is located at the East 71st Street at Rumsey Playfield; Balto is located at East 67th Street near the East Drive. The Statue of Duke Ellington is also placed in the park. The carousel is also located in the park at 64th Street.
The Great Lawn is the vast lush green area, where different cultural events are held every year like Public Theatre Company's summer theatre productions; the Philharmonic Orchestra performance at the Lincoln Center in every summer.
Other attractive features include 36 bridges and arches and more than 125 drinking fountains including seven ornamental fountains. These include Pulitzer Fountain at Grand Army Plaza; Angel of the Waters at Bethesda Terrace; Sophie Loeb Fountain and Cherry Hill.
Visiting the Park
The park remains close for motor traffic on Monday to Thursday from 10a.m to 3p.m and 7a.m to 7p.m. Motor traffic is closed on weekends from 7p.m and on Friday it is closed from 7a.m. on Holidays the motor traffic is closed from 7p.m the night before and 7a.m the days after.
For tourists' attraction, Central Park offers ice-skating rinks, artificial ponds. There are jogging tracks in the park. There are many more for the tourist to have a good time here in the park like it has 36 bridges, 21 playgrounds for children. For visitors, there are restaurants inside the park where you can sit and relax and enjoy delicious foods as well.
