I'm sure that somehow you have already worked on or under an organizational Mission Statement of some kind. In this age of corporate culture, mission statements are everywhere. Every company, volunteer organization, group, team who is serious about their business and productivity has spent hours and countless meetings creating a simple (and hopefully meaningful) paragraph or two describing its purpose, meaning, goals and mission.

If done correctly, this simple idea works well because it keeps the managers, leaders, employees and/or volunteers focused on a specific purpose bringing them to a clear understanding of their individual objectives.

So what about you? Yes, you! Do you have a Personal Mission Statement? What about coming up with one? You work so hard everyday. You put a lot of effort doing all that seems to be right. But, are you clear about what you are working towards? Just like a company will not be able to succeed much without a clear vision of its goals and objectives, so will you continue to muddle through life probably without going much anywhere. At best you will achieve things by chance and not very efficiently.

A Personal Mission Statement doesn't have to be something huge, convoluted or even very formal. There are simple and few steps you can take that will help you clarify your vision and focus on your purpose. Here a few steps to take:

Be Simple - Simple is good! Actually, simple is best! If you make it too complicated you will most likely not be able to follow it. Narrow down to the essential and clean up what does not belong to what you truly want to focus on.

Be Personal - Oftentimes we end up with goals that are not a true reflection of who we are. We inherit these ideas from someone else -- a parent, a partner, a teacher, a friend. Be certain that your statement and personal mission follow what YOU truly want to achieve for yourself.

Be Courageous - Don't shortchange yourself. If you have a passion, a dream, a calling, respond to it. Even if it may seem impossible right now, have the courage to face it and at least imagine the possibility. Yes, you can!

Be Serious - It is your life, after all. This doesn't mean that you have to be formal and strict, but if you want to really make something out of the time you are spending on this planet, you will need a dose of responsibility and direction. Be kind to yourself, but be real.

Once you put some thought about your Personal Mission Statement, I encourage you to write it down somewhere visible -- your computer, fridge door or bathroom mirror. Leave it there at least for a couple of weeks until you have incorporated it into your life. Every time you have a decision to make, every day when you wake up, check and see if your actions are in alignment with your purpose. Check if you are still on course. Make adjustments if necessary and keep moving.
