What are cold sores and what are the options available for cold sore treatment?
Â
Cold sores are the common name for the symptom brought about by the HSV-1 virus. Also known as oral herpes, it has no known cure. These sores often come in the form of small painful fluid-filled blisters around the mouth and lips. It is highly contagious and brief direct contact with the blisters is enough to transmit the virus to another person. Oral herpes may also be transmitted through contact with the saliva and other body fluids of a person with herpes.
Â
The outbreak of blisters is sometimes accompanied by fever and may last seven to twelve days. The natural course of the blisters is to break spontaneously allowing its contents to ooze. Prior to erupting the person infected with this malady may experience itchiness or sensitivity on the soon-to-be-infected skin.
Â
These blisters, with proper cold sore treatment, disappear after the virus runs its course rarely leaving scars. The disappearance of the symptoms however does not mean the person infected is cured of the virus. Once infected with oral herpes, a person remains so for the rest of his or her life. After an outbreak of the blisters, the virus remains latent and hidden within the nervous system. Cold sores may reappear if triggered by certain conditions such as the lowering of the immunity system, overexposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays or stress.
Â
Since the virus has no cure, efforts to treat the disease is focused on lessening the intensity, shortening the duration and providing relief for the symptoms brought by it. Specific antiviral drugs such as oral acyclovir, valacyclovir, or famciclovir may be prescribed by the attending physician in order to hasten and lessen the frequency and intensity of the appearance of the blisters.Â
Â
Over the counter remedies are also available to provide relief while the antiviral drugs do their work. Aspirin and ibuprofen can be taken to ward off fever and provide some pain relief. Topical ointments are also available to hasten the recovery from blisters and to prevent them from spreading.Â
Â
Home remedies have also been found to be effective in providing relief from the symptoms of oral herpes. Frequent warm baths and keeping the infected area clean and dry prevents the wounds caused by the blisters to be hot beds for bacteria and infection. Diets and supplements rich in vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin E and zinc also serve to keep the immune system of a person up in order to prevent frequent outbreaks of the sores.
Â
Should you suspect that you are infected with oral herpes, immediately consult a medical specialist for testing and medication.
