Parkinson's disease (PD) is one of the most common movement disorders with a prevalence rate of 10-22/10,000. It usually affects patients above 60 years, but 25% of the patients are also young onset PD patient. At its worst it can lead to a loss of family, social and professinal life of the affected individual.
On 9th September a campaign " Conquering Parkinson's Disease" - We will not be defeated was launched from the Jaslok Hospital platform. Even today there is severe lack of awareness about the effective treatments available for this disease and there is even more apprehension about the surgery. The aim of the campaign is create an awareness and confidence amongst patients about surgical therapy. During the press briefing five patients who had been operated 8-10 years back shared their experience with other and media. Most of these patients have been independent till date.
In Mrs. Ms words: PD surgery has helped her doctor husband to resume back his work and this in turn has helped them to impart good education to their children. Another patient, a telephone operator has been able to resume back his work. There were many such heroic stories to share. The campaign will be carried out all across western India, involving Nashik, Nagpur, Ahmedabad, Solapur, Rajkot and Indore cities where patients of those cities will share their experience. The aim is to present 8-10 years of follow up of patients who have undergone surgery (Deep brain Stimulation) for PD.

Mr. Vimlesh Shah presently 54 years was the first patient to undergo subthalamic nucleus (STN) deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery in October 99. Vimlesh worked as a diamond sorter before being afflicted by the disease. He was diagnosed to be suffering from PD at young age of 33 years. Few years prior to undergoing surgery, he had been significantly disabled and had to give up his work. His wife had to do petty jobs to support the family. Vimlesh was helped by various diamond merchants to undertake this innovative surgical option. He successfully underwent DBS surgery on 14/10/1999. Following surgery he had remarkable improvement in his condition making him fit enough to resume his duties till last couple of years. Now once again the PD has caught up and though he cannot work, he can still live an independent and dignified life.
Dr. S M: (case no. 6) Dr. M, dentist by profession was afflicted by PD at the age of 33 years (1991). It started with right hand tremors. Initially the disease was well controlled by medical treatment, but as the disease progressed, he started suffering from side effects of medicines. In 1995, his left side got involved with PD. Dr. Mukadam, now new that his time of active practice as a dental surgeon was limited. He got a job in middle east, which he immediately accepted. (He felt that this was best way to make use of the little time that he had before the disease disables him). In 2000 he found out about this surgery and approached Jaslok Hospitals functional neurosurgical department. He underwent DBS in March 2000 and had a miraculous improvement in his symptoms. He got such a confidence that he quit his job in the middle east and rejoined his family in Pune. He restarted his dental practice and continues to attend it till date.
Mr. Prakash Gurav: This young telephone operator fell prey to PD at a young age of 30 years. By thirteen years (at the time of surgery) he was significantly disabled. Medicines had been giving him intolerable side effects in the form of severe dyskinesias and he was totally immobile without medicines. He decided to undergo DBS surgery and was operated on 13tn October, 2002. Following surgery there was remarkable improvement in his condition and he could resume back his work. We shall hear his wifes perspective of DBS surgery and how they changed their life.
Mr. S S was diagnosed with PD in 1992 when he was 52 years old. Mr. Sain had been on board of many companies and lived a very active life at the time of diagnosis. He was a true fighter. He underwent Pallidotomy in USA from which he sad some improvement for 2-3 years. In 2000 his condition rapidly deteriorated and had to stop all his activities. He underwent STN DBS in December 2000. Following surgery his disabilities almost disappeared with his motor scores showing more than 75% improvement. During past ten years he accomplished many things including marriage of his children, traveling abroad and social activities. He shall share his experience with us.
