Some reading this may not have a clue about Twitter, what it does, or what the rage is all about. I've been there and tried it out and am hooked now.

What is Twitter? Twitter is a tool to keep people connected and to let people know what you are doing right now. Each message called a "Tweet" is no more than 140 characters. A sister site is called Flutter and only allows 25 characters for each message.

Here's how it works. You send out a message, say, about your favorite football team (remember, all within 140 characters). If you are "following" at least one person, that message will show up on your profile page and that person's "time line." As you tweet more, the more others will see. Your friend may have 500 following him. If you send an interesting tweet, others will follow you. You follow them in return, and tweet more.

I have more than 20,000 followers and 20,000 people I am following. Twitter likes you to keep a one to one ratio. When I send out a tweet, 20,000 people (at least) will see what I have said. But that number goes into the millions when you think of all the people that 20,000 people know.

Part of Twitter's "shtick" is playing around with the tool for a bit. For the most part, you can't break it, so spend some time getting used to all of the functions.

So, why do I have 20,000 followers? I'm not on Twitter to make money. Many do go on there to try to sell their wares. In fact, I often tweet this: "this tweet won't make you richer, more beautiful, less grayer, have whiter teeth or cause you to become younger." That one sentence that I send around encapsulates a good 50% of the tweets you see on Twitter.

I go there to interact with people. I also am on Twitter to encourage people as they travel through life. It's not an easy journey but it is a good one.
