Fans of the Slowhand are certainly celebrating this fall as the highly acclaimed guitarist released his latest album, simply titled Clapton, at the end of September. The record features a number of guest appearances from notable musicians including Steve Winwood, Wynton Marsalis, Sheryl Crow, Allen Toussaint and Derek Trucks. The tracks cover a variety of musical genres, including everything from country blues to traditional brass bands.
In support of the effort, Clapton also announced several tour dates for 2011. He will hit the road in May, stopping in cities that include Dublin, Belfast, Glasgow, Cardiff and London. In a statement about his new album, Clapton said, "It's an eclectic collection of songs that weren't really on the map." Some of the singles include "Run Back to Your Side," "Rocking Chair" and "When Somebody Thinks You're Wonderful."
Eric Clapton first wet his musical whistle when he joined the Yardbirds in fall of 1963. The bluesy-rock 'n' roll band helped influence his tastes later in his career. He played with the Yardbirds until 1965, when he joined the Bluesbreakers for a short time before joining the lineup of Cream, a band which became successful in the U.S. with the hit singles "Sunshine of Your Love," "White Room" and "Crossroads."
Clapton signed on with a few more group collaborations before embarking on his solo career in the 1970s. Although he was plagued by alcohol and drug addictions, Clapton's brilliance on the guitar went practically unmatched. During the decade Clapton recorded and released 461 Ocean Boulevard, There's One in Every Crowd and the even more successful No Reason to Cry (which featured Bob Dylan) and Slowhand (which included the hit singles "Wonderful Tonight" and "Cocaine.")
In the 1980s, after receiving help for his problem with alcoholism, Clapton once again charged into the music industry, collaborating with a number of artists including Roger Waters and Phil Collins. Some of the first albums to make appearances in the new decade included 1985's Behind the Sun and 1986's August.
The 1990s brought grief for Clapton, who lost his four-year-old son Conor after he fell from an apartment building window in New York City. One of Clapton's signature songs, "Tears in Heaven," was written in honor of his son. Throughout the rest of the decade Clapton kept busy making music, releasing Unplugged, From the Cradle and Pilgrim. He also performed with a number of artists including Sheryl Crow, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Neil Young and Tom Petty.
With the onset of the 2000s, Clapton continued to keep a busy schedule, releasing Reptile and Back Home as well as appearing at several big concerts, including a tribute concert to George Harrison, who had recently died of cancer, as well as the 2005 Tsunami Relief Concert. His latest album has been anticipated by his many fans, all of whom know that there is simply no one else to rival Clapton's skills on the guitar.
