The very first type of ringtone to be integrated in mobile devices was the monophonic ringtone, which, as implied by the name, could only play just one note at a time. These early tones could only ring in a sequence of beeps that varied in frequencies. The next ringtone format to be introduced was the polyphonic tone which was far removed from the old, monotonous beeps of the monophonic tones. Polyphonic tones could play sounds that could imitate music quality because of their ability to simultaneously play at least sixteen sounds. The ringtone innovation that followed were the real tones which mostly had the MP3 format and resulted in the replacement of simple ringtones by music tracks and other kinds of recorded sounds.
Alongside the general people who comprehended the usefulness of the most recent ringers, business observers could also foretell that great prospects awaited the ringtone industry.
It was in the year 1998 when the first commercial ringer, made by a Finnish mobile operator, made its debut in the market scene. Prior to that, the built-in melodies of cell phones that came with the phones when they were first bought were the only ringtones that people had ever heard of. RTTTL (Ring Tone Text Transfer Language) was the format of that initial ringtone which meant you could download it over the Internet to later transfer the tone into a mobile device through SMS, infrared, or Bluetooth.
Shortly after that, the birth of monophonic tones took place, which was the result of various improvements done on the RTTTL format. The monophonic tone was designed to be tremendously functional and was comprised of short beeps that were extremely monotonous to hear. The effect of the tone was boring if anyone listened to the same beeping continuously.
Monophonic ringers were followed after a while by the polyphonic ringtones which were a great improvement on the earlier tones. Polyphonic tones were able to imitate the sounds of real musical instruments that, when properly arranged, were closer to sounding like true music. This particular type of ringtone has been integrated into almost all the latest mobile handset models for sale.
Yet the biggest breakthrough in the evolution of the ringtone was the advent of real music that could serve as mobile ringers. The greater number of present day mobile devices make use of the latest innovations in sound technology thus enabling phones to play recordings of all kinds as ringtones. These ringtones are known as real tones but they are also called true tones and master tones, all because of their superb audio quality.
Other examples of ringtone innovations are the video ringtones and the name tones which are the most recent additions to the ringtone family. Ringtones are truly amazing and will undoubtedly improve as time passes by.
