Ice is one of nature's most important gifts. It exists in many forms, and all over the globe. It provides dozens of needs in dozens of ways, everywhere, everyday.

Liquid water becomes ice when the atmospheric temperature drops to thirty-two degrees Fahrenheit (zero degrees Celsius) or below. The hydrogen and Oxygen atoms bond together, forming ice. Ice controls a very large and important part of our climate. It helps regulate world wide temperate and plays a significant part in the water cycle. When glaciers melt, they release huge amounts of water that we-and the rest of the ecosystem-rely on. But at the same time, glaciers and ice caps hold water, giving us more land to live on. If they didn't contain some of our water, the ocean would be almost 50 feet higher.

Even though we usually don't think of it as the same thing, snow is a type of ice. Each snowflake is a delicate ice crystal. Annual snowfall makes up another large part of our water supply.

As well as our needs, ice provides many forms of entertainment. Ice hockey, ice fishing, ice-skating, ice climbing, ice racing, and the Winter Olympic Games. And where there is abundant snow and ice, people create ice sculptures. Ice festivals are held all around the world, in places like China, Japan, Russia, Sweden, Canada, and the United States. In some extremely cold areas, hotels are made from ice. Everything from furniture to the structure is ice, creating a unique feel for tourists.

Because ice isn't available year round in some places, people have found ways to store it. In fact, storing ice in warm climates has been going on for thousands of years. Back in 400 BC, Persians were keeping ice in underground "refrigerators" so they could access it during the warmer seasons.

For places where there is naturally no ice (such as Honolulu, Hawaii or Huston, Texas), ice is delivered. Actually, it's a booming business. We now have special insulation products that allow us to ship ice anywhere. We need it for processing food, for chemical engineering, for concrete mixing, and much more. It's even available at consumer levels, packaged in bags that you can find at any grocery store.

The truth is, we couldn't exist without ice. It controls a huge part of our daily lives. Everyone, from those staying in ice hotels to those living in the deserts of Houston, depends on nature's great gift of ice.
