It is the common sense for human that scientists are people with respectable manners, intelligent and creative brains. However, for all knowledge that people obtain today, scientists have to go through serious debates.


 


The Shapley - Curtis Debate in 1920



Simply known as “The Great Debate”, the 1920 debate of Shapley and Curtis was hosted by the Smithsonian Institution in a room full of people. Heber Curtis argued that the Milky Way galaxy was one of a number of galaxies while Harlow Shapley thought that Milky Way galaxy was the center of universe.




Whether the debate’s result went, both scientists were right about the nature of the universe.


 


Margaret Mead and Derek Freeman



The American cultural anthropologist Margaret Mead concluded that culture determined behavior not biology. Her depiction was based on her time in Samoan where young women enjoy freedom in love-making. However, Freeman, having also spent time in Samoan, reached different points of view.




What Derek Freeman did was to criticize Margaret Mead’s theory after her death.


 


Edison and Tesla



The argument between Edison and Tesla started over the theory alternating current or direct current would serve the needed power. The debate later broke out into a war of accusations. According to Edison, the alternating current was dangerous.




To prove the danger of Nikola Tesla\'s alternating current and safety of his competing direct current, Thomas Edison electrocuted a living elephant.


 


Newton and Leibniz: The Calculus Controversy



Newton and Leibniz all started working on the same calculus but in different approaches. However, mathematical community seemed to support Newton rather than Leibniz. Although Leibniz was accused of plagiarism, modern calculus is more like Leibniz\'s.




Isaac Newton and Gottfried Leibniz were both fathers of calculus.


 


Cope and Marsh and "Bone Wars"



Edward Drinker Cope and Othniel Marsh were both hunting dinosaurs and even hunting each other. The two had gone across North America to find fossils. During the exploitation, Marsh bribed Cope\'s digging crew to have all the new fossils of dinosaurs.
