Whether you use your system for educational purposes or recreational purposes; if you are using your computer you must be browsing the net and share something with friends and family and guess what it means!? You are always in a danger zone!! You are, all the time, prone to a huge and ever increasing database of malicious programs that are deliberately created to wreak a real havoc to your important data and precious system!!! Yes, it is computer viruses we are talking about. Computer viruses come in all shapes and forms but one thing is common that these are not the friendly creatures. Though it is wrong technically to include other sort of malware in the category of viruses but as per general notion following is a brief explanation of common types of viruses and how they harm your computer:

Viruses: Viruses can harm your system in a number of ways; it can infect your files; can hinder the proper functioning of programs; it can slow down the performance of PC; it can corrupt the data and can even infect the operating system. Viruses attach themselves to some program in the system and infect one file to the other every time you run that program.

Trojan Horses: Trojan horses are the most dangerous malware that appear to be beneficial and you think you have made a good addition to your programs but as a matter of fact it comes with a bad intention; which can range from destroying your data to even corrupting the operating system on the whole.

Worms: Worms are the malware that mostly attack while you are sharing a network. These programs find the loopholes in the network security and get into these holes like the real world worms do. Once they enter the network they start replicating (and they don't even need to attach themselves to any program for this) capturing most of the space in the memory causing hazards to security of your data and system. Another way to get worms is email attachments and they are capable of sending automatic mails to your contacts spreading from one computer to the other.

Tracking Technologies: Tracking technologies are the malicious programs that come in one of the two forms; spyware and cookies.

1. Spyware: As the name indicates a spyware is a type of malware that is made with the intention to spy on you. These programs spy on your browsing habits and provide the data to some third party that uses it to send you emails and ads in the form of pop-ups - the specific term being Adware causing annoyance and putting you on risk as these may come with dangerous viruses as well instead of promotional programs from that third company. They also slow down the performance of your system. Some of the spyware even steal your financial information.

2. Cookies: Cookies are a necessary evil. They not only save the data of the most visited pages freeing you from the hassle of entering the log in information all the time you visit that page but also enable you to open certain pages that won't open otherwise. However, there are some cookies that are stored in your system through the sites you visit and track and record the data, your browsing habits and use it for other purposes as advertisement or to infect your system.
