Virginia Tech (VT) is situated in Blacksburg, Virginia and is uniquely made up of nine colleges and graduate school. It boasts an impressive 60 bachelor's degree programs alongside 140 masters and doctoral degree programs. The VT student body consists of more than 30,000 full-time students who are taught by a team of professors, whose student to teacher ratio average 16:1 in the classroom. Virginia Tech's beautiful main campus includes more than 125 buildings, 2,600 acres, and is one of the only schools in the nation to be furnished with an airport. Owing to an adjacent corporate research center, Virginia Tech is currently ranked 42nd in university research in the United States.
Virginia Tech was founded in 1872 with a focus on agricultural and mechanical studies, and to this day, it continues as one of the very few United States universities which maintain a corps of cadets. The school was founded when the Virginia General Assembly bought the grounds and facilities from the Preston and Olin Institute using federal funds. After being founded, Virginia Tech's first president, John M. McBryde, reorganized the academic programs to resemble the more classic four-year college. Another unique fact about VT is that it was the very first school in the United States that opened its corps of cadets to women, in 1973.
Two other titles that VT sadly holds onto are the deadliest school shooting as well as the deadliest mass shooting by a single gunman in the history of the United States. This violent act was committed by Seung-Hui Cho on April 16th 2007 and the result was 32 people killed and many more injured.
Virginia Tech boasts many honors and awards which the following are merely a small example of. VT is nationally ranked in the top 20 public colleges and universities which offer a first-class educational experience at an exceptionally low price, being one of the nation's best educational bargains, according to Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine. Virginia Tech was also ranked by U.S. News & World Report's among "America's Best Colleges 2008" in the fall of 2007.
This was just a small example of the many features that VT has to offer and the reasons why it is such an astounding college. It has a unique campus, foundation, and history, which have each shaped it to be what it is today: An outstanding university and place where student learning and growing are of utmost importance.
