I've talked about having more than one malware detector and a good anti-virus program, these should protect you from the baddies in the Ethernet world, but what protects you from yourself or kids? Â What I mean when I ask about protecting you from yourself is when you add or remove programs and files. Â The left overs can slow your computer to a crawl. Â When you boot up, does it take two, five or even ten minutes? Â There are a couple of things that can be done to improve performance.
If you are comfortable looking at some of the settings on your computer, you can take a look at the "Startup" from the start menu and remove applications that you don't use any more. Â Another way of cleaning up your startup is to activate the "msconfig" and review the applications that are identified to start when you boot the computer. Â Access the "msconfig" by opening the "run" command from your "Start" menu. Â Once the "run" application is open, enter the command "msconfig" in order to see a tool that will allow you to modify the applications that begin when you start the computer. Â There are several tabs, click on the Startup tab to view a list of what gets started. Â A lot of these are needed in order to make your computer run, but you can consider not having tool bars start. Â A couple of good examples of a checks to remove would be GoogleToolbar and GoogleDesktop.
Just a couple of these startup programs not running will impact the amount of time it takes to boot up your PC.
If all of this seems confusing, there are tools that will automate a lot of the technical aspects of making your PC work better. Â One of the tools that I have been testing is called Advanced System Care 3. Â It is a suite of tools that makes tuning up your computer psuedo "one click".. I will scan for malware, tracking cookies, the registry for un-necessary entries (please be careful here) and has add on applications that make downloading and disk defragmenting easier. Â While there is a resident disk defragger included with Windows XP, the one that can be obtained through Advanced System Care 3 uses another type of compaction to defragment. Â The Advanced System Care 3 defrag only defrags the files. Â I does not reallign the memory on the hard drive.
With all of that said, you should at least have an antivirus program, adware or malware scanning program, make sure your firewall is turned on and not compromised and for better performance you can add something like Advanced System Care 3.
One last thing about making your computer better, faster and more like it was when you bought it, please be careful and if you are uncomfortable with making change or changes, please get some help or at least ask questions. Â I shouldn't cost too much to have someone look at these things for you.
