A new breed of computer users, who are neither geeks nor techies, are learning very simple computer maintenance skills to keep computers running in top condition, without paying a dime, by using these simple techniques and freeware programs to get the best from their machines, be they Mac or P.C.

Keeping it clean

• Location

Your computer is happiest with lots of space around it, not crammed between other electronic equipment, or blocked in by piles of books. Aim for a good all-round airflow, avoiding places where books and plants may fall onto it, causing damage. Never place drinks of any kind near a computer.

• External cleaning

A soft, lint-free cloth, already slightly damped with a neutral cleaner may be used to clean the screen, outside casing and flick dust from the keyboard. Always unplug from all electrical sources before attempting to clean your computer.

• Internal cleaning

It is possible to remove accumulated lint and dust by opening the casing, (after unplugging it) preferably wearing an Anti-static bracelet. However, this may invalidate warranties, and is not recommended for the beginner.

Replacing and Upgrading

• Many components of a computer can be replaced or upgraded. Fans, hard drives and various cards wear out or are outgrown by the user. It is important to read all documentation, carefully, when installing new items, to ensure the requirements are met.

Power sources

• A "UPS", or uninterrupted power supply unit, connected between your computer and the power source will absorb surges in current. During power outages it gives you up to 2 hours to finish and save work and extends the life of your computer by regulating current.

Computer Maintenance Software Programs Anyone Can Use

• Many free and pay programs claim to do wonderful cleaning work on various parts of the computer, but they should be carefully researched before use, a popular and safe freeware choice is "Ccleaner".

• Defragmentation is salvation!

Your computer stores information rather like a bad housekeeper. It may have bits and pieces of a file stashed in different places all over your drives. Defragmentation brings the bits back together, speeding up and extending the life of your computer.

The first time you defrag your computer it can take several hours, depending on how many files are present. Windows has its own program for this, found by selecting," all programs" from the start menu, then "accessories", "system tools" and finally "disk defragmenter."

• Keeping the junk off your computer.

If you are one of the many people using Mozilla Firefox, your browser has an option to clear cookies, cache and temporary files, each time a browser session is ended. Clearing them will help keep your PC clean.

• Updating

Automatic updates can save time and searching for information, but can also slow a computer, depending how often they are scheduled to run. When adding any new programs, check carefully how often they update.

• Removing programs no longer needed

Go to your start menu, choose "control panel", then hit "add or remove programs" to see what is currently installed.

• Keep a clean desktop

Desktop items are automatically loaded when you start your computer, so find out which ones you really need, and get rid of all the others, to speed up the time it takes to get working.

• Anti-spy ware - how much is enough?

Good basic Anti-virus programs like AVG, Avira, or Norton Antivirus, (free or pay versions) provide enough protection for most users. Use only ONE program, as they tend to fight amongst themselves if more are used. Auto updates are recommended to ensure up-to-date protection.

• Join free online computer maintenance forums and get answers to all your questions

Free computer forums are great places to ask questions and get advice for any problems that may come up while performing computer maintenance. They often have social network features and safe downloads for freeware programs.

• Limited user accounts for your children and other casual users

Windows allows the owner to provide limited access accounts for secondary users, very useful if a family member likes to change things around or play online games.

Computer Network Maintenance

• If several computers are linked together to form a computer network, either at work, or home, frequent checks are needed to see how information is shared between them, especially if one holds records on online banking activities.

Computer Maintenance Services

• For more advanced cleaning, fan replacement or upgrades to larger hard drives, it is recommended you contact your local computer maintenance specialist. Choose one who is authorized to work on your make and model of computer, if there is a warranty involved. Find an authorized Computer Maintenance Service in your area by checking websites for your make and model of computer.
