People suffering from arthritis often complain about constant pain they experience while living with this condition. The pain may be localized to the hip, back, knee, feet or neck. Inflammation that occurs around the joint, daily wear and tear of joints, damage to the joint from disease, muscles strains caused by forceful movements against stiff joints and fatigue are the main causes of pain in arthritis.
There are primary and secondary forms of arthritis. Primary forms are:
- Osteoarthritis
- Gout and pseudo-gout
- Ankylosing spondylitis
- Juvenile idiopathic arthritis
- Still's disease
- Septic arthritis
- Rheumatoid arthritis
Secondary forms of arthritis are:
- Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome
- Haemochromatosis
- Henoch-Schonlein purpura
- Reactive arthritis
- Psoriatic arthritis
- Hepatitis
- Sarcoidosis
- and others.
Some diseases can mimic arthritis, such as:
- Osteoporosis
- Fifth disease (parvovirus infection)
- Hypertrophic osteoarthropathy
- Multiple myeloma
Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis can affect both the smaller and the larger joints of the body, including the feet, hands, back, hip or knee. It usually happens because of the daily tear and wear of joints. This type of arthritis starts with a minor pain when the person is walking. However, eventually the pain becomes constant and can even occur during night, while the person is asleep. After some period of time, the pain becomes so apparent that the person cannot perform any type of activity.
Osteoarthritis primarily affects the elderly people, because it's caused by daily tear and wear of the joint.
There are certain risk factors when it comes to this type of arthritis, such as:
- Prior joint trauma
- Primarily sedentary lifestyle, with little to no physical activity
- Repetitive joint use
- Obesity
Rheumatoid Arthritis
This type of arthritis is a disorder where the body's own immune system starts to attack body tissues. The reason for the attack is unknown. Most damage happens to the joint lining and cartilage - this will eventually lead to erosion of two opposing bones. This disorder affects
joints in the fingers, wrists, knees and elbows, and can lead to severe deformity if not treated properly and on time. For this reason, earlier diagnosis and aggressive treatment is necessary in order for individuals to have a decent quality of life. Unlike osteoarthritis that primarily affects elderly, rheumatoid arthritis affects people 20 years of age and older.
Since the medical science still doesn't know what causes rheumatoid arthritis, all treatments are focused on easing the symptoms.
