Lead in water needs to be of concern to all of us even if we live in a new house that doesn't contain any lead in our pipes. You won't be able to taste or smell the lead water, nor will you be able to see any particles of it if you are trying to find it. The particles are much too small to see.

The same dangers presented to us for lead-based paint, pertain to lead in water also. If you live in an older home you will be more at risk for having lead water than new homes, but even newer homes can contain lead, because of old pipes delivering the water to your homes.

Many of the older pipes under our city streets are corroded and contain lead. Also the solder holding the pipes together will contain the dangerous substance, which will in turn contaminate the water as the H2O travels through the pipes.

Lead in water is especially dangerous for pregnant women. Consuming it can cause birth defects and learning disabilities in your child's later years.

Children who drink lead water and have higher blood-lead levels, exhibit a significantly higher rate of behavioral problems than children with lower level of lead in their blood. This may cause a greater rate of juvenile delinquency in this country.

The old saying about leaving your water run a minute before you drink it comes into effect here. Water that has set in the old pipes for a greater amount of time will have more lead in it. As it sets there stagnant it will absorb more lead - where free flowing water won't absorb as much.

The only way to know how much lead you have in your water is to test it after it comes out of your faucet. Since the lead is coming from the pipes that deliver the H2O to you, or the pipes in your home if you have an older home, the water may have tested safe when it left the water processing plant, but that doesn't mean it is safe when you go to drink it.

To protect you and your family from the dangers of lead in water you need to get a home water filter. These purification devices are easy to install, and are relatively inexpensive.

The home water filter I have is less than a hundred dollars and cost just 9 cents a gallon to purify my water. Mine has an ion exchange, which exchanges the lead for the healthy nutrient potassium.

If you're concerned about lead water, check out my web site in the bio section below to find out which one I use.
