There has never been a time in human history when leadership has been more necessary and more in demand. Today more than ever we need men and women with the vision, courage and integrity to lead our families, our communities, our organizations and to set examples for others to follow.

The world needs people who can step up and solve the pressing problems facing humanity in the 21st century and show people how to take advantage of all the wonderful opportunities that are available to them today and in the future.

Leadership is often situational. In fact, when you study the great leaders in history it is often the case that leadership was thrust upon them. What this means to you is that it is your responsibility to commit yourself to the cause of your ongoing development. It is your responsibility to do the things that will draw the mantel of leadership toward you.

One of the best ways you can evolve into a leader is to read stories and autobiographies of other leaders, such as Albert Schweitzer, Mother Theresa, Winston Churchill, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Jr., George Washington, Robert E. Lee, Florence Nightingale, Ulysses S. Grant, Clara Barton and Emily Dickinson.

When you read the life stories of men and women who have done exceptional things two things will begin to happen to you: First, you will learn they had problems to contend with that were often much worse than yours. They faced obstacles, adversities and difficulties that in some cases seemed to be almost insurmountable. They had many disappointments and temporary setbacks all of them, and sometimes they experienced total failure.

However, they kept believing in themselves and their abilities. They kept working on themselves and pushing forward and eventually they achieved the kind of greatness that made them worthy of our study today.

The second thing that will happen to you is that you will begin to unconsciously absorb the qualities that they these leaders had and which you most admire without even being aware of it. When you read about men and women of courage and tenacity you will begin to identify with and then see yourself as a person of courage and tenacity. You begin to make decisions in your daily life based on how you think those leaders might behave themselves under the same circumstances. You become more of a leader when you think about how other leaders handled a particular situation that was similar to yours.

In a few months of reading about leaders, you will find that your body language, your behavior and your self-image will change in the direction of you becoming a better and more admirable person.

One of the qualities of true leaders at home and at work is that leaders see themselves as role models. They realize that it's up to them to set the standard to behave in such a way that other people will look up to them and imitate their behaviors.

Acting the part, walking the walk, talking the talk and behaving as if you were exactly the person you desire to be is one of the most powerful ways to program your subconscious mind with new attitudes and behaviors of true leadership.
