Finding that you or a loved one has contracted a serious illness, such a cancer, can bring on a tremendous amount of pressure. Sudden accidents are another source of anxiety. They can range from being very serious, where someone was killed, to those who were injured and even hospitalized followed by an extended recovery time. Included in these stressors are the issues where no one was injured but it cost time and money that perhaps you may not have had to deal with such an incident.

Juggling time can be very inconvenient. Also, the financial burden of unexpected life events can bring on stress which is added to all the other pressures in your life on a given day. A sudden death of a loved one not only brings on emotional trauma, but it too can also cause a financial burden. Especially, if you have to take time off from work or have to travel to another place.

An unexpected job loss is extremely stressful. Many people often worry, and have the thought in the back of their head, "What would I do if I lost my job?" This in itself can cause internal anxiety and health problems. It can also be accumulative, and added to all the other stressors which we must contend with on a daily basis, might bring on a major crisis when it finally takes place.

Becoming the victim of a crime is a very traumatic event. Depending on the severity of the stress you experience, you can go from being angry for awhile, to actually needing therapy and still may not resolve all of your issues. Often times, these incidents can leave you to deal with the residual stress for years.

Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do about unexpected life events and the stress it brings. Other sources of stress, which are progressive accumulating events and customary anticipated life events, are also areas in which we have no control. But you CAN DO something about how you handle and respond to them.

Progressive accumulating events are those types of stressors that compound over time. Often unnoticed or ignored, they continually either get worse, or cause other issues to worsen because of their pressure. As we repress and/or suppress these continual issues they can bring on physical pain as well as emotional distress. In fact, many illnesses can be linked to this type of stress. Included in this category are work or career problems that seem to continue to build over time. Boredom can often be included, as well as parent/child friction and spousal conflict, to mention just a few.

Just the same as Progressive Accumulating Life Events bring on stress, so too, do Customary Anticipated Life Events. These include, but are not limited to: graduations, marriage, children, retirement, parties, reunions, and vacations. Even though these are often "happy occasions" that should bring much joy and celebration, they nevertheless, have their own price tag when it comes to making major behavioral changes in our lives. Many people struggle with change, even though change is more constant than gravity. We all like familiarity and wish that things would stay the same.
