Microsoft is going to introduce shops, similar to those of Apple. Nobody really knows or understands how this new store-concept is going to be implemented and how it will evolve in the near future, but the first step is taken and speculations follow. This is one of them:

I think that it may be a good idea. Knowing that Google is their main rival although not yet in Operating systems, but this could change. Google however is fully focused on the internet and is not likely to open stores. So an architecture where stores support the virtual business could be interesting. But the question remains: what is MS going go sell in these stores?

First of all their own products starting with mobiles and perhaps more of their catalog like entertainment, education, software development, servers (perhaps), hardware, business software...

Will they open up for partner products? Not likely. Microsoft has never really opened up so it wouldn't make sense now. They have their own product line in the above areas.

Much of the success is to do with the success of the internet. Now as credibility and trust is at stake it is possible that people will fall back on the real instead of the virtual shop.

It is also possible that this shop will be a combination of shopping, meeting community members, and experiencing and paying for services that can be tailored. Instead of selling an X-box the shop could offer a virtual experience (room) and charge visitors who want to experience it.

When Bill Gates released the mosquitoes he was experimenting with fear, the same mechanism is Microsoft using to hunt designers of viruses by offering a prize on their "life" of half a million dollars. Internet is no longer the safe place to invest Microsoft must think. And the concept of a shop around the corner fits in such a thought. Might work.
