A Worm is an application that can pass through the networks by using network machinery to spread without any support of hardware or software. Therefore a Worm is known as network virus.
Mainly Worms can be distributed with email clients through attachments. These emails contain some instructions to collect all the email addresses which are present in the contacts and the copies will be sent to all the senders.
Usually these Worms will be in the form of executable files or scripts (Usually Worms will be VBScript). This Worm will be activated when the receiver opens the attachment. You should stop opening the files blindly that contains attachments in the emails from unknown senders to protect your computer from Worms.
If you execute any file that can be decoded by the OS or any executable applications, then your computer would be infected by Worm. The files with the extensions doc, vbs, exe, xls, bat, msi, eml, pif, scr, and com, may specifically infect your computer if it is associated with a Worm. The files with the extensions rm, txt, ram, jpg, mid, gif, avi, bmp, asf, mp3, dat, wav, mpg cannot be decoded by the OS. So the chance of infection that occurs to your computer is negligible. Generally the files with the extension JPG or GIF will be enclosed by Worms.
In certain cases, any type of files can hold the code that carries Worms, but the computer should contain another virus to decode the code that is stored in the files. You should make sure that antivirus has been installed in your computer and thoroughly scan each attachment before you open it to avoid the infections by Worms.
There are many worm removal tools available that can be used to remove worms. It is advised to make use of these tools to keep the computer protected from dangerous worms.
