Does CSS for BEGINNERS sound about right for you? Do you keep asking yourself "What is CSS anyway?". Maybe you don't feel ready for anything too techie - but you would love to understand the basics of what CSS actually IS.

Well, look no further - that's exactly what I'm going to tell you!

CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheets. It is a computer language used to define the style/formatting details used in a web site. This includes things like colours, background images, fonts, margins and indentation.

To every CSS style definition there are two components:

1. The Selector - defines which tags the style will be applied to.

2. The Attributes - specify what font, size, colour etc the style actually is.

An exciting aspect of CSS is that it allows you to achieve many effects that could not be reproduced using plain HTML. For example it is possible for border colors, styles, widths etc to be set up individually for each side of the border.

CSS can also save you a lot of time and effort in applying one basic, consistent style to the text of your document.

What do I mean by that?

Most web browsers default to a serif font like Times New Roman. If you want to create a complex web page layout (with tables etc) using a sans-serif font like Verdana or Tahoma this will involve many, many tags - all dedicated to keeping the text consistent.

So, what's the problem with that?

None - until you decide to change the font and you are faced with the task of adjusting hundreds of tags to make what seems like a very simple change.

If you understand HTML you could set the default font to be used throughout a page but you would have to adjust one tag for each page of your site. And you'll be in trouble if you need to add a second font to the page.

Now, that's enough CSS for beginners! And if someone asks YOU -"What IS CSS anyway? - you can tell them!
