Visual merchandising is important, especially if you run a boutique.  Boutiques need to have a specific appeal in order to be successful.  Otherwise, they will simply appear to be retail stores that "don't carry much".  Working on your brand image and projecting the look of success will help people to gain confidence in your boutique.  Creating a "visually effective" environment does take a little practice.  Here we will go over some ideas and things to keep in mind when you develop your image, décor, promotions, and displays.  We will highlight why slatwall is such a good choice for most retail boutiques that want to have a good visual impact.

First, get a good feel for what you want your boutique to communicate.  Refined, unique, funky, or glamorous, your décor, displays, and even your lighting all lend a little bit of definition to your store's personality.  Making sure that everything fits together is important.

Customers go into a store subconsciously taking note of tiny details.  They want to know if they can "trust" what you're communicating to them.  Does the price match the expectation, based on what they have seen so far?  Does the décor match the types of clothing that are offered?  If unique brands were seen up front, do they continue throughout the store?  Sending the wrong messages up front can turn a customer away because you may have inadvertently caused distrust.

Part of gaining that trust quickly is showing them what they want to see within the first few seconds of laying eyes on the store.  People can get first impressions set in their mind within 2-4 seconds.  This is why we so strongly advocate for slatwall.  Slatwall panels can be used in unique spaces and help you to utilize vertical space.  Not only are you saving space and allowing a more open sales floor, but you're getting those displays up high where customers that may only be walking by can see them.

Use slatwall displays to highlight and feature certain items.  You can use simple track lighting to spotlight areas of high interest.  Use your best merchandise as the center of the display and then accessorize and surround these gems with complimentary items.  Spotlight them so that the eye is quickly drawn to the display.  Arrange things in a way that draws the eye back to the far reaches of the boutique.  A stand-out shoe wall or other large contrasting display in the back of the store will cause a customer to be drawn inside, or at least get a really good look at what all you have to offer in an instant.
