The West Nile Virus is an infectious disease that is transferred from birds to humans and other animals by mosquitoes. That is, a mosquito will suck the blood of an infected bird and then bite a human being or an animal and thus transferring it.

Additionally, this virus can be transferred from one person to another via a blood transfusion and from a pregnant woman to the baby she is carrying, as well as through breast milk. However, these latter methods of transference are rare.

Although animals can be infected with this disease, presently, there is no indication that it is passed from animals to humans.

Some victims of this infection may show mild to severe symptoms, while some will show no signs of having it. Persons, who have shown signs of being infected are troubled with headaches, fever, meningitis and vomiting and some other illnesses.

Currently, there is no vaccination to protect us from this disease and there is no known cure for it. Nevertheless, depending on the severity of the effects of the virus on a person, he/she will be treated accordingly.

Since there is no cure for the West Nile Virus, in some cases, it leaves a person with lifelong effects. Some of the effects are depression and a lack of the usual physical strength. On the other hand though, a person who is infected with this disease may recover from it. With this said, this disease can be fatal to both people and animals.

It should also be pointed out that not every mosquito is a carrier of this disease, so do not panic at the sighting of one, but it is best to keep away from their bites, as a precaution.

Also, a person who was bitten by a mosquito who is carrying the virus, may not become infected and this can be due to the immune system of the bitten person.
