You may know that Yuri Gagarin was the first man in space on April 12, 1961. However, have you ever known that a lot of astronauts that are not human have been sent to the space before him? You may definitely wonder who they are now. These non-human astronauts are familiar animals including mice, guinea pigs, newts, fish, dogs, cats and so on.
Mice
A mouse had been found in the fifth flight of the famous “Albert” Series of V2 launches in 1950. One year later, the 1951 U.S. Aerobee missile flight also contained eleven mice. Over fourteen others were found to be perished on a Jupiter rocket in 1959. A rat called “Hector” was also sent into space in 1961 by France.
Mice are known as some of the earliest animals in space
Newts
In 1985, the Bion 7 mission carried 10 Iberian ribbed newts on board. Newts have been taken on other Bion flights and used on the Columbia (1994), the Foton-M2 mission (2005) and etc.
Turtles
The first turtles were believed to enter space is in 1968 when the Soviets launched the Zond 5 spacecraft that included two turtles.
Dogs
Female dogs were often chosen for the Soviets’ space experiments in the 1950s and 1960s. The most famous space dog is probably Laika which flew with the Sputnik 2 rocket in 1957
Cats
The first cat was sent into the space named Felix. It was strapped into the France’s Véronique AGI rocket in 1963. Some sources believed that the female cat named Felicette which was launched after that was actually the first cat in space because Felix had run away at the last minute.
The first cat was sent into the space by the France’s Véronique AGI rocket in 1963
Guinea pigs
The first guinea pig flew into the space in 1961 when it was placed in the Soviet Sputnik 9 spacecraft. The biosatellite FSW-1 3 laughed by China in 1990 also brought many plants and animals including guinea pigs into the space
Fish
Mummichogs were the first kind of fish in space. Two mummichogs flew with Skylab 3 in 1973. Many other kinds of fish have also been in space including guppies, zebra danios, carp and so on
Monkeys
Albert II became the first monkey in space when it was accompanied with the Air Force Aeromedical Laboratory “Albert” flight in 1949.
Spiders
The 1973 Skylab 3 space mission carried the first spiders into the space. They are a couple of European garden spiders named Arabella and Anita
Frogs
The first frogs were in space in 1970 when NASA sent two bullfrogs into orbit according to a program called “Orbiting Frog Otolith”
