DNS is an important constituent of the Internet that is responsible for converting human-readable domain names into computer-readable IP addresses in sync with the DNS Zone files existing on your server and that connect domain names to IP addresses. A zone file in a domain may have a number of varied kinds of records. With the help of DNS Zone Editor in your cPanel or Control Panel, you can easily create and remove A and CNAME record files.
Basically, there are two zone editor icons in the Domains section within your cPanel, namely, Simple DNS Zone Editor and Advanced DNS Zone Editor. The Simple DNS Zone Editor allows you to Add, Reset and Delete A and CNAME records, whereas, the Advanced DNS Zone Editor allows you to Add, Edit and Delete A, CNAME and TXT records.
âA record' refers to the DNS record that maps hostnames to IP addresses. It is quite essential as it is responsible for allowing DNS servers to identify and locate your website and other services on net. It allows your visitors to access your website, FTP servers and email accounts. âCNAME record', on the other hand, refers to Canonical Name Record, which forms an alias that allows a querying service to resume the DNS look with a new name. A âTXT record' refers to a text record that consists of certain information to be read by querying servers. The information can be useful data for the SPF or DomainKeys email authentication systems.
Simple DNS Zone Editor
Adding an A record is very easy. First select a domain from the given dropdown menu. Then type the name and address of the A record. Click âAdd A Record' button. Remember that the A record should only be added when the added service is not provided by either cPanel or your web host.
Adding a CNAME record is very similar to that of an A record. After you select a domain from the dropdown menu, type the Name and CNAME of the CNAME record and click âAdd CNAME Record'.
If you wish to reset your DNS Zone files to the defaults after having made certain modifications to them, click the checkbox against âAre you sure you want to erase all entries and revert to the default state?' and then click âReset Zone File'.
Deleting an A or CNAME record is exceptionally easy. Just click âDelete' button next to the record you want to remove. Then again click âDelete' to confirm the record is deleted.
Advanced DNS Zone Editor
To add a record, after having selected the domain and typed the Name of the record, you must type the record's time to live in the TTL text box. Then select a record type, A record, CNAME record or TXT record. Type the Address of the record and click âAdd A Record'.
To edit a record, just click Edit button next to the record to be edited. Then change the Name, TTL, Type or Address, as required and click âEdit Record' to save it.
To delete a record, click âDelete' button next to the record you want to remove. Then again click âDelete' to confirm that the record is deleted.
