Recently the idea of "buying organic" has become increasingly popular. When you go to your local grocery store, you likely see certain fruits, vegetables, grains, meats, and other products labeled with a sticker that says "Certified Organic" or some similar distinction. We all know that, in general, organic is supposed to be a good thing. But what exactly does it mean? Is it really worth it to buy organic

Organic Fruits, Vegetables, and Grains

Organic labels are seen most commonly on produce. If produce or grains are labeled Organic, they do not contain any synthetic pesticides or herbicides. During the 20th century and now into the 21st century, using synthetic chemicals to kill potential pests and weeds has become a common practice. Many crops are sprayed with multiple types of toxins to keep away any living things that could damage the crop.

The problem with this mode of thinking, however, is that those chemicals are in some cases detrimental to humans as well. Organic produce and grains also are not genetically modified, which some people believe is harmful to human health, though this has not yet been proven.

Organic Meats and Dairy

Organic meat and dairy comes from livestock that have been raised with little to no use of antibiotics. While giving livestock antibiotics may seem like a good idea, in some cases it may be an indicator that the livestock did not naturally have strong immune systems and therefore relied upon large amounts of antibiotics to keep from being sickly.

Meat and dairy labeled Organic also are raised without the use of growth hormones. Growth hormones increase the weight of livestock and therefore the amount of meat per head of livestock, but scientific studies have shown that ingesting hormones can have negative effects in humans.

Deciding What to Buy

Your local grocers can point you towards the organic products in every section of the supermarket. Organic products are now widely available, giving people a broader choice in the foods they buy.
