Laser or light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation is a wonder that has continued to make miracles in almost all areas of human endeavors, particularly in the field of medicine. The application of laser has even spilled over to commercial use, most notably in tattoo removal.
It is standard practice among professionals in the tattoo removal business to use many types of lasers. The reason is due to the fact that a laser will only be effective to a specific wavelength in the spectrum of colors. This means further that your medical practitioner will use a particular type of laser for every color of your tattoo. If your tattoo has as many as four colors, then there will also be four type of laser involved.
There are mainly four types of laser used for removal of your tattoo. The first type targets blue and black inks. This type is termed Q-switched ruby laser. This also removes green inks in varying degrees of effectiveness. The second type targets orange and red inks and is called Q-switched Nd:YAG. This laser type produces more pain and scarring than all the other laser types. The third type is also employed with blue, green and black inks but what is different is that the skin is not affected. It remains practically the same before and after the tattoo is removed. This type is called Q-switched alexandrite. The fourth type is called dye lasers and also targets red, orange and purple inks. Upon consultation, you should ask your medical practitioner if all these types are available in his or her clinic so you will not be wasting your time, money and effort.
Even with the use of laser, you still need several sessions with your medical practitioners. The number of sessions is largely dependent on the size and color of your tattoo. Your skin type and color will also tell if you need more trips to your doctor. It normally takes around eight to twelve sessions to remove a tattoo using laser. Even with that number of sessions, the removal rate is around 95% only. A higher removal rate than 95% is still feasible but the risk to your health also increases. An eight-week recovery time is interspersed with the eight to twelve sessions. This recovery time will allow healing to your skin and expel the ink through your body's natural way of disposing foreign matter. Over time, when much of the ink has been broken down by the laser you will also notice the gradual disappearance of your tattoo.
