Home and office technology continues to move forward at an alarming pace, and as I said before, it is better to try as much as is practicable to stay as closely as possible to these innovations. Industry, of course took the lead much earlier with their industrial robots doing all sorts of things. And of course we did not care less; we are innocent consumers of industrial outputs so are only interested in the end product, not in how these terrible and unwelcome robots do their job. But now some of these robots are creeping into our homes and our lives so we should have enough cause to worry and start trying to understand what harm or good these dangerous things might do to us.

It has been said that the current advances in modern technologies make it very hard to distinguish it from magic. The day is not far when the two disciplines will merge into one formidable entity. Unfortunately, no one knows what will happen then, we can only speculate, each according to his or her logical or superstitions capabilities - it will not make much difference, I suppose. Logic and superstition are also merging into one vague and dubious entity because technology is based on logic while magic is based on superstition. And where does this leave us? I guess we will never know until it is too late but I think the consequences are likely to be terrible for those who will be around in the distant future. But for now I think we are not in any harm's way so we are privileged to get the best out of these innovations. So I think it is prudent to look at some of the surprises that technology has in store for us.

Imagine getting up in the morning and going to the bathroom. As you do so the tub starts filling up and, as you walk into the bathroom, the tub greets you

Good morning, sir, your bath is ready.

You acknowledge, take your bath and quetly walk out of there to dress up. And as you walk into the kitchen, the kettle greets you

Good morning, sir. Coffee or tea, sir? Tea, you say. With or without milk, sir? the milk jug asks.

Milk, thank you, you say. How many sugars, sir? the sugar basin asks. No sugar. Oh no! You..., the sugar basin protests, and so on.

This is the kind of stuff that science-fiction was made of, but it is fiction no more. It should not be surprising considering that science-fiction has always stood between science and magic. Yet what I just said above is no longer fiction. We can no longer say things fall apart. Instead, things fall together, so to speak. Areas that seemed poles apart years ago now seem to be merging. The scenario above is called pervasive computing.

There is also wearable computing, where miniature computer chips are embedded into your skin or your clothes so that you can communicate with your business or friends where ever you are, any time. Farmers, especially, will like this. You stick a chip under your cow's or pig's skin. And whenever you dial the beast's number, a message appears on your phone screen telling you precisely where the beast is located and what it is doing. And ladies also, should love this: instead of carrying theirr mobile phones in their handbags, they just put on their favourite earrings (earphones) and necklace (microphone), and off they go.
