Team building is often done through the use of planned events or activities. As a business owner or manager, it is in your best interest to incorporate this type of event as often as possible. You can hire a third party provider to do the work for you, if you feel that this is something important to you (which it is) or you can do the planning yourself. If you select to plan your own activities, you will need to incorporate a few puzzles, games or other activities that help to bring your point to fruition. In short, you need to ensure that your employees are working together to achieve the goal you have set for them. Your goal may be to develop them as a true team.
Finding unique events can be difficult. If you are tired of the old activities (like the trust task of falling back on each other in the hope of getting caught) you can and should consider any of the following activities. They are unique and yet they teach the specifics of team building.
1. The helium stick activity is a good one to try. Here, you ask two groups of people to stand facing each other in two rows. They extend their index finger and the helium stick (a lightweight rod) is placed on their fingers. Without removing, pinching or otherwise holding the stick besides it lying on top of their fingers, their goal is to lower the stick to the ground. The task is nearly impossible initially. Insist on the group stop the task and develop a strategy to achieve their goal.
2. The plane goes down, which 12 items are kept for survival? The group works to achieve this goal of listing the 12 most important items that they need for survival. This type of event helps to teach communication skills. The group must work together to list only 12 items, rank them and tell why they are the most important. They communicate this to the rest of the groups.
3. Balloon blowing is another fun but educational game you can plan for your event. Here the group is divided into two teams. Each team stands in a circle and one balloon is placed in the center of the group. Once thrown in the air, the group must keep the balloon aloft longer than the other group. The only trick is that they can only use their breath to do it!
When planning events for team building, you should remember the importance of using tasks that employ a variety of skills. You may want to focus on a few tasks that help to develop a strong understanding of what it means to be a team. More tasks does not mean more will be learned, keep this in mind.
