Anxiety medication is over prescribed these days. Many patients go into the doctors office sometimes offering their fake stories to try and trick doctors into thinking they are sick. In many cases this works because mental disorders have no physical symptoms that a doctor can look at to tell if the person is truthful or not. Unlike a heart condition or some other diseases, mental conditions are diagnosed through questioning a patient and listening for responses and actions.

In other cases, doctors will prescribe medication based on their personal opinion and their personal experiences with other patients. This can be both good and bad. Just because a doctor thinks medication worked well on a patient does not mean it worked. This same doctor will keep prescribing this medication too all patients that have the same symptoms because it worked the first time. For example, a doctor prescribed anxiety medication for a young girl. Later that year her mother died and the doctor thought it was a success that the child did not worry, cry, or feel anything about her beloved mother's death. This doctor will keep prescribing the medication to other patients with this example in mind because it was "successful".

Anxiety medication usually effects serotonin in the brain. It blocks your brain's ability to remove the neurotransmitter serotonin from actively working. Serotonin is responsible transmitting feelings and actions related to mood, stress, and other anxiety related issues. By keeping more serotonin in the brain doctors believe that this helps the patient. In some cases this medication is beneficial because the panic attacks are so severe that the patient needs some immediate relief.

Medication for anxiety is one for great debate. You have to decide if it is right for you. Speak to your doctor and do your own independent research through accredited sites run by legitimate organizations such as the AADA
