How does obesity affect people? What are the cause and effect of obesity? First let's go over what obesity is. Just because you are overweight does not necessarily make you obese. You can find out if you are by finding out your BMI which stands for Body Mass Index. To calculate your Body Mass Index:
1. Multiply your height in inches by your height in inches: your height x your height
2. Divide your weight by your answer for number 1: your weight / answer to 1
3. Multiply by 703
4. Round to the nearest tenth ex. 26.1119 = 26.1
If your answer is over 30 then you are considered obese.
If it is between 25 and 30 then you are overweight.
Your Body Mass Index should be between 18.5 and 25 for a healthy weight.
If it is under 18.5 then you are considered underweight which can also lead to health risks.
So what is the cause and effect of obesity? Some of the causes are: overeating, eating the wrong kinds of food, not getting enough exercise, genetics, certain medical disorders and some say even sleep deprivation can be the cause. If our body doesn't get enough rest or if it gets too much rest it won't work properly.
There are eating disorders which can lead to overeating. Stress and depression can lead to overeating which ultimately leads to the cause and effect of obesity. No matter what the cause is, obesity can usually be cured by eating right and getting proper exercise.
How does obesity affect people? Some of the affects can be Hypertension(high blood pressure), Diabetes, Coronary heart disease, Stroke, Gallbladder disease, Sleep apnea, respiratory problems, Some cancers (endometrial, breast and colon), and high levels of cholesterol. It can also lead to depression and more stress.
High blood pressure is also known as the silent killer because it rarely shows any symptoms. High blood pressure can lead to a stroke or a heart attack. Normal blood pressure is usually under 120/80, while high blood pressure is above 159/99. Between 120-139/80-89 is Prehypertension which is above normal but not up to the level of hypertension which is high blood pressure.
Sleep apnea is when there are pauses in breathing during sleep. While the person who has sleep apnea may not be aware of it, it can lead to serious complications such as Hypoxemia (low blood oxygen) and congestive heart failure.
How does obesity affect people who don't choose to do something about it? It can ultimately lead to death. If you are obese you need to do something about it.
