Have to fix your or your family's computer again but aren't up for the tremendous amount of work that goes into figuring out what the heck is wrong with the thing? Here's a list of the most common factors for slow computer performance.

If you follow these simple steps, your chances are 90% that the worst causes for your slow computer performance are fixed. Okay, let's go.

1. Install And Run Anti-Virus And -Spyware Software

Just download some free tools from the internet and let them run while you grab a nice cup of coffee. I recommend Avira and Spybot if you don't want to get too hung up on this one.

2. Remove Any Unnecessary Software

Got games installed that are no longer played? Software that was downloaded, tried and then never used again? Pictures and movies that were downloaded, looked at once and then stuffed into some "junk" folder?

Remove everything you don't need anymore relentlessly. If you stumble upon something that is hardly used but might missed by someone, back it up somewhere external. Move on to Step 3.

3. Scan Your Registry

You can scan your registry for free to make sure there are no errors. Most software costs money but we want to just scan first, and this can be done for free.

4. Defragment Your Hard Drive

Do this overnight. Windows comes with an easy-to-use hard drive defragger. What this does is it gathers all chunks of data and puts them neatly together so they can be accessed faster by the system. The only problem is this process can take a lot of time, depending on the size of your HD and how much data you have on there. As I said, put it on over night and in the morning your computer should be cured of slow computer performance.

The first time this routine might take some time, because you have to find and download the tools. But once you have everything together, the whole process should take you less than an hour, except for the defragmenting of course. But you only have to do this once every couple of months.
