Solar power for producing electricity for homeowners is hardly a new topic. Recently the subject of DIY solar power has begun to draw more attention as more focus is being placed on green energy.

The sun provided us with more potential energy than we could ever use. But the high cost of residential solar systems continues to be a deterrent for many homeowners. Solar panels are a collection of photovoltaic cells made from semiconductors, such as silicon, which convert the sunlight into electrical energy. When sunlight strikes the cells, a portion of it is absorbed within the cell. Energy from the light is transferred to the semiconductor. The energy forces electrons to break loose and begin flowing as a current. There is more to the process, but this is all we really need to know to build a workable and efficient solar generator.

In order to build a solar panel system for your home, the panels will have to be encased in a shallow wooden box. Plywood or pegboard will both make a suitable enclosure. Now where can we find solar panels to begin our project? There are several options available, but since we're talking DIY, we will only talk about two sources. First you can contact local highway contractors and ask if they have any for sale. Those highway signs you see in construction areas are all powered by solar panels. Sometimes these signs get damaged by passing traffic and the company just replaces the entire unit.

Another good place, and maybe the cheapest, is ebay. Many panels are sold on this site everyday. Many will have damaged areas, and may not be suitable for your project. The more you research and learn about building your solar generator, the easier it will be for you to find which panels will work the best and how to properly wire the panels together for proper operation.

This article is meant only as an introduction into the world of DIY solar power and is not meant to be a step by step guide to building solar panels. The point is that solar power for your home does not have to cost tens of thousands of dollars. Many people have built their own systems and are as we speak reaping the benefits of clean and renewable solar energy.

Do your homework and you will soon learn that building your own DIY solar power system doesn't have to be expensive or overly complicated. Many others just like you have done it and there is no reason you can't as well.
