Almost daily the media reports that unemployment rates are going up. It is alarming and scary. People are afraid that they may be the next victim of the crumbling economy, and those who already are unemployed see their few chances to snatch a job steadily dwindling away.

Many Internet sites and numerous unemployment services offer great tips on how to handle a job loss. They suggest updating your resume, going door-to-door to present yourself, network, revise your spending, freelance, volunteer, or upgrade your skills. These are just a few of the actions one can take as part of a good job hunt strategy, useful guidelines which are easy to follow, yet won't do you much good if your emotions are not ready.

It is almost impossible for an outsider to fully understand the emotional turmoil someone affected by sudden unemployment is going through. It is like looking through frosted glass window. You can see the contours of a person on the other side, but you cannot see their frightened face and tears. Dealing with unemployment is terrifying, even if you have a modest savings account to fall back on.

Some employees know months in advance they are on the pink slip list. They have been told that their job will be outsourced, the business is downsizing, or that their franchise, store or office will be closed, but until it actually happens they will live in denial. They have always followed the rules, never messed up, were totally dependable and have been with the company for years... it cannot happen to them. Then the letter arrives and shock sets in. They are confused and do not understand why this is happening to them. What went wrong and how are they going to feed their family? They wonder: will their family and friends look upon them as failures?

The many emotional stages of unemployment can lead to behavioral changes. Some people will sleep a lot more, while others will either lack appetite or perhaps find comfort in food. A number of unemployed will lose faith in themselves and no longer care for their appearance. They may even turn to alcohol and drugs to make them forget how they view themselves. These victims need to be reminded that they are not less of a person because they are currently not working. Eventually the tide will turn, new jobs will be created and they will be able to return to the work force. They have nothing to be ashamed of.

Setting daily goals and staying active are helpful ways to stay positive and keep the spirit up. Nobody will deny that, despite all good intentions, this will not be a frustrating and bitter time. The job search will be tough and luxury items will be missed. However, with the support of family and friends, grief can be conquered and the unemployment situation accepted.
