Shinmoedake volcano, which is located in a remote part of the Kirishima range to the southern part of Japan, erupted on Thursday (January 27, 2011) for the first time during 52 years. It has been spewing a blanket of 3,000m ash into the air and caused negative consequences like disrupted train services, closed schools and some cancelled domestic flights, even ejected small rocks from the eruptions having broken windows in many buildings and cars.

Experts told that there was a dome of lava developing larger inside the volcano’s crater but whether the dome would spill over the rim and create big flows down the volcano’s sides is difficult to guess.

Shinmoedake volcano is 4,662 feet (1,421 meters) high

An aerial view captured Shinmoedake peak erupting between Miyazaki and Kagoshima prefectures on January 27, 2011

Ash and lightning spewed across the skies over Japan when Mount Shinmoe erupted on January 27, 2011

Thousands of local residents have been safe in evacuation centers

The Meteorological Agency expanded a no-access danger zone to two miles (three kilometers) from the peak and planned to send helicopters to Mount Shinmoe so that they could monitor activities near the crater

In 1991, there were 43 people deaths in the eruption of Mount Unzen, also on Kyushu Island
