Software has really taken off lately. There's a software to perform virtually any task, if you could imagine a task, there's probably a software for it, and a dictionary is no exception. A dictionary is an absolute necessity for certain people, writers for example, have embraced computers to perform their job (i.e. write!) as it is a lot more convenient than writing your content on a piece of paper. Researching with the Internet, editing your writing, etc. is a lot more efficient if you use a computer. Leaving aside writers, the average person would be curious to dissect a new word they come across, thus having a dictionary always available at your fingertips in your personal computer is a good idea.

I've tried several software apps, but I find the Sage's English Dictionary and Thesaurus to be a great solution to a dictionary software. It is a freeware product that consists of over 200000 definitions complete with synonyms, antonyms, etc. It features dozens of features from looking up items on the clipboard instantly, history for searched items so you can return back to any word you might have forgotten, words can be searched in real time 'as you type' and also has a speech tool for phonetic transcription among several other features.

This software works on XP and Vista operating systems. If you don't want to have a separate desktop application as a dictionary there are always enough web based tools that lets you perform the same function. Google has its very own tool to look up a word as well, you simply need to append 'define:' at the beginning of the word you need and search for it, you'd then be provided with 'definition based' results from various sites, there are plenty of dedicated dictionary and thesaurus websites available on-line too like thefreedictionary.com among several others.
