Every agricultural operation needs water and water needs oxygen to continuously keep water rejuvenated. Stagnant water that's deprived of oxygen quickly gets taken over by unhealthy algae blooms that generate noxious gases and spell death for any healthy growth of plants. This is the reason why an aerator is essential whether you're trying to maintain a vineyard or a turf.
The purpose of aerator turf is multifold. On the one hand, the aerator breaks down the compacted soil and its tines create furrows that encourage the growth of roots for the plants while on the other hand air pockets are created that support oxygen pools for the rejuvenation of the water whenever it's replenished. While the professionals who maintain the grounds advocate aerating the turf only during the spring and the fall, there's another school of thought that recommends that aeration should be done the entire year around.
Basically, aerators are required to de compact the soil especially during the period when plants and soil microorganisms are in their active growth phase. These are also the times when the roots have the maximum demand for oxygen. However, this is invariably the period when the players want the course to be available for them, the general feeling being that maintenance of the grounds is at the expense of their availability for the game. This need not be so if you select the right kind of machines for the job. In the earlier days, aerators with long tines were used especially in courses with ridges and lots of sand with problems of drainage. Today, solid tine is used sometimes in combination with pulling cores. Deep tines are used in the spring for shattering the soil and creating fissures that result in multiple pores. You can also use triangular blades that create several small and narrow slits in a technique called slitting that's also used in the spring for connecting the surface of the soil with drainage areas down below. Its lightweight permits its use in spring and fall even in case of heavy rainfall. Needle tines are used in the summer for relieving old compaction problems and reducing the demand of fertilization.
