It seems like only yesterday that setting up a website was the "smart" thing to do. Then suddenly, blogs became the gold standard and most people raced to create a blog and began blogging. But that is now history, and today is today.
All the talk today is about "Social Media" with Twitter and Facebook dominating the conversation. It's the latest phase in online interaction, it's the latest phase in community, and as you might expect, it's beginning to catch the eye of entrepreneurs and business owners too.
It's hard to believe that news reporters, movie stars, athletes and well known people from Snoop Dogg to Amber Benson to Kathy Ireland to Travis Barker and numerous others, are dashing to position themselves as part of the Twitter community.
But Twitter is far more amazing than that. What a lot of people do not realize is that Twitter is a local based social tool too. It's likely your county government is using Twitter, your local TV news, your local Fire Department, your local library, your local college, even the gal that cut your hair last week. If they aren't on Twitter today, it's just a matter of time.
But there's another force moving fast and furious on Twitter. It's an amazing transition of a more serious nature whereby business owners (both large and small) including entrepreneurs and home-based businesses are starting to tap the profitable potential of Twitter. When we see established companies like @HRBlock, @comcastcares or @theBKlounge begin lining up on the Twitter bandwagon, it's without doubt time to to start planning YOUR Twitter game plan. It is likely that this "craze" boils down to the time tested fact that a lot of business actually occurs in social gatherings, at cocktail parties, on the golf course, or at other social events. Now, through Twitter it's easy to benefit from the internet version of a non-stop 24 hour, 7 day a week cocktail party of unimaginable proportions.
The facts and news stories are thought provoking:
"Domain provider, NameCheap's Twitter campaign earned them over 4000 Twitter followers, a 47% increase in new visitors and a 20% increase in new customers."
"88% of marketers surveyed are interested in using social media to market their businesses, BUT 72% have only been doing so for a few months or less. A significant 64% of marketers are using social media for 5 hours or more each week and 39% for 10 or more hours weekly."
"Business owners age 30 to 39 are most likely to be using social media marketing (44.8%), followed by 20 to 29 year-olds (40.3%) and then 50 to 59 year-olds (38.7%)."
How should I interpret all this?
It means that if you are an entrepreneur or own a business, you must not hesitate to head over to Twitter and set up a Twitter account. Could it possibly be that simple? Well, not exactly. Once you have your Twitter account opened, that's when the fog rolls in. It's a very very basic concept, but like a Rubik's Cube, unless you know WHAT to do, you'll soon be scratching your head.
How do I get followers?
Be interesting (as in VERY)
Be YOU (only notch it up)
Be social (that does not mean putting a lampshade on your head)
Be helpful and informative
Engage existing followers regularly in interesting things
Tweet as often as you can, but maintain quality
Look sharp (Photo/wallpaper etc)
Seek out targeted followers, who may be predisposed towards your "Twitter Personality" and subject matter
It goes without saying that there's a lot more to learn.
