Are your drivers consistently running late? I have found that running late on deliveries can cause major customer service problems that can be avoided. Being behind schedule can also lead to overtime pay that eats up profits. In this tough economy, it's vital to keep costs to a minimum. It can also lead to a loss of business by customers that consider punctuality important.
Many times we will run into problems that can't be avoided. Don't get frustrated and upset over things we can't control like weather and traffic just keep your customers informed, they are likely to understand.
Over the years I have implemented several techniques to avoid these problems and found them to work extremely well.
Daily pre-trip inspections will help prevent time consuming breakdowns.
Properly training employees on what is required of them.
Call each customer to confirm delivery before leaving warehouse.
Provide a good map to each truck. I prefer Thomas Brothers Guide.
Give a two-to-four hour window for your arrival.
Call the next stop as you finish each delivery to assure they are home. (Sometimes they will step out thinking they will get back before you arrive.)
Assemble merchandise in advance whenever possible.Â
Preload trucks the night before to save valuable time the next day.
When running late give your customers a courtesy call to keep them informed. ( Nobody likes to be kept waiting in the dark.)
Never give exact arrival times; problems may arise, putting you in a bad position.
Scheduling by a geographic location when covering a large area. Deliver to the North in the morning and the South in the afternoon.
Complete each stop as quickly as possible don't get caught in trivial conversations that waste time.
Employing any or all of these strategies can save you valuable time and money. For additional ideas, ask you delivery people. They can often provide keen insight into providing solutions to your scheduling difficulties. Asking for their input can also help them feel like an important part of the company. Don't hesitate to ask others for advice. They may suggest little things that can make a big difference in your productivity.
