If you are a person involved with network management, chances are that you have already heard of the word NETCONF. It is an acronym for network configuration and represents the latest approach to it keeping the requirements of users who are roaming in mind. This management system is still under development and not available in the market to be used by the consumers. It is better to call it a protocol that was first made public on December 13, 2006 as a Remote Procedure Call layer.

NETCONF has been conceptualized as a protocol to install, control and erase configuration of network devices. It is stateless and allows the user to modify any given network configuration and at the same time to fallback upon the currently used system should the new configuration fail. In ordinary situations it may seem that using NETCONF is akin to using a bullet to kill a rat, but its real potential comes to the fore when the user takes interface to power safe mode if the system fails to get a lease, or when trying to prevent uuencoded traffic if VPN fails to establish.

CLI scripting was the preferred method to make changes in the configuration until NETCONF came along. However, there were severe limitations in CLI scripts as they do not have any inbuilt way of transaction and also require changes whenever there is any addition or deletion of network elements. Another method to make changes in configuration earlier was SNMP, but it too has shortcomings as it can only be used only where performance and monitoring applications are in place.

There are some prominent features and capabilities in NETCONF not found in earlier systems. Here is a list of these advantages.

1) State data and configuration can be distinguished

2) Numerous configuration data stores

3) Record of configuration changes

4) Testing of configuration and its validation

5) Recovery of data filtering unwanted data

6) Warning of events and even their playback

7) Procedure of call mechanism can be extended

The system that has been developed aims to be an aid rather than an impediment. It does not require any attention of the user. The only requirements for its successful implementation are that the user should have the knowledge to use tools used for configuration so that he can make suitable changes in the network environment. There is no chance of the system called NETCONF failing or being rendered defunct. The system is stateless, thus implying that there is no reliance on state information. The system is very lightweight and operates on batteries. What is great about it is that it performs within a single thread.

Though this system of network configuration is being developed keeping in mind Debian systems, it is amazingly pliable and can be used for Linux based systems also. Though the protocol is in an alpha state, it is being made in Python and ultimately will have the capability to be ported to C or C++. This protocol holds much significance for the users in near future.
