People aspiring to become stuntmen must first of all work on their physical fitness. Their bodies have to be in top form as their physical appearance really counts. Performing stunts requires a fit body that is athletic. People must have great stamina, coordination and strength in order to be good stunt performers. Some of the exercises that aspiring stuntmen can get involved in are running, martial arts and gymnastics. They help in making the body flexible, agile and fit for any stunts that they will be required to perform.
They can also get involved in activities that involve high speeds as most stunts tend to be swift. Some of these activities are horse riding, sky diving, rock climbing, skiing, firearm use and scuba diving. Biking and high speed driving also work well with stunts. When they are equipped with these primary skills, they can now enroll into a school that is dedicated to bringing out the stuntmen in them. Here, they will be taught more skills in the tricks and craft that make up stunts from the professionals.
People are advised to combine their stunt skills with some acting as this will make them more marketable in the job market. They could be required to act out a scene that requires the involvement of these stunts and that is why prior acting experience is necessary. Others may choose to learn the art through apprenticeship whereby they learn by watching a professional perform the stunt and imitate him. There is no known grading for stunts as there are no degrees available.
After qualifying as stuntmen, it is important for them to sign up with agents who can help them get roles in the stunts industry. To showcase their skills, they are required to compile their abilities into a tape which they send to various agent companies for marketing purposes. This acts as their resume and the people hiring them will be able to pick the best out of the visual display.
The agent, after gauging the tape sends it to the stunt coordinators as they are the ones who do the hiring. They are known to prefer signing up stuntmen through agents and according to the recorded performances, they will be able to get good references from the agents. Aspiring stuntmen are also advised to join unions that are involved with on-screen performances. They can sign up as extras as this increases their chances of being hired.
