I've been following a blog post comment thread regarding controversy over Twitter and this subject came up. There are some people who truly believe that Twitter is making people stupid. I had to look into this to see if there could actually be any truth to the statement that seemed to me to be only a matter of opinion.


So I had to look at the reasons why someone might think this. The most obvious reason is that there are stupid people on Twitter. Here are some examples of this evidence:


· Very poor grammar and spelling


· Opinions projected as truths


· Inaccurate facts purported as truths


· Excessive use of "leet-speak" or "text-type"


· Bad spammer accounts


· Explicit pornographic accounts (against TOS)


· Account creation spam (susieQ1, susieQ2, susieQ3, etc)


But do all of these things really mean a person is stupid? Maybe they're just lazy, in a big hurry, young, socially disadvantaged or in some other way challenged. I guess "stupid" is a relative term itself which is not what we're trying to define in this article.


So for the sake of argument, we can probably agree that there are stupid people on Twitter and that this type of platform encourages people to be lazy with their typing and to speak/type without first thinking on what they're going to say. This breeds foot-in-the-mouth comments that most don't even realize can be corrected by simply deleting the tweet.


My conclusions tell me that while there are quite a lot of stupid people using Twitter. However, I can find no evidence that it was actually Twitter that made them that way. My theory is that stupid people are everywhere and with or without Twitter, there will be an influx of stupid people in certain areas and times. In fact, it seems they tend to attract one another and congregate in areas. Let's not blame Twitter for a problem that's been around as long as man has existed.
